Sleep Laboratory
The Mount Sinai Hospital Sleep Center accommodates patients with sleep disorders. Most patients visiting the center suffer from Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), a disorder in which one stops breathing during sleep. Sleep Apnea is most often caused by an obstruction to the airway. This obstruction disrupts sleep, preventing the patient from ever achieving a deep rest.

Symptoms of Obstructive Sleep Apnea include:
  • Daytime fatigue or Somnolence
  • Loud snoring
  • Morning headaches
  • Frequent daytime napping
  • Mood swings
Upon referral from a physician, patients will be evaluated by a pulmonary physician specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders. When required, patients are diagnosed overnight in the Sleep Laboratory with a sleep pattern assessment. The state of the art technology at Mount Sinai’s Sleep Center monitors brain waves, eye movement, heart rhythms and oxygen levels. Following the overnight stay, patients are provided a thorough report of their condition compiled with results from the advanced computer technology. If necessary, patients who require further follow-up with appropriate treatment will be transferred to Mount Sinai’s outpatient clinic.

Patients scheduled for a stay in the overnight Sleep Center should expect to stay from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM.

Mount Sinai Hospital Montreal is presently in the experimental stages of developing a home sleep study program in order to accommodate more patients with Sleep Apnea.
