The Asthma Management Center at Mount Sinai Hospital Montreal is where healthcare professionals diagnose and control Asthma symptoms through effective management programs, minimizing the use of medication.
Asthma is a chronic, inflammatory lung disease characterized by recurrent breathing problems. Patients with Asthma have airways that narrow easily and are typically allergic to inhaled allergens. As the incidence of asthma increases, the Center recognizes that this chronic disease requires diagnosis, treatment, education and continous assessment by a certified pulmonary physician.
The Asthma Management Center includes a six-point plan for Asthma sufferers: - Encourage patients to develop a partnership in Asthma management
- Pulmonary specialists assess and monitor Asthma severity by measuring symptoms and lung function
- Avoid control factors that cause Asthma
- Medication plans for long-term management
- Asthma-attack management plans

- How to recognize Asthma triggers
- Avoidable precipitating factors and what to do if they occur
- Non-avoidable factors, such as colds, and what to do if they occur
- How to understand the different types of medications
- The difference between relievers and preventers
- Inhalation techniques
- Training in the use of a peak flow meter
- How to use a medication action plan
- Other treatments for Asthma
