At Mount Sinai Hospital Montreal, we understand how dealing with a chronic disease can affect the spirit. This is why our Long Term Care staff uses an approach that respects dependent residents and has a goal of improving their quality of life.
The interdisciplinary team in the Long Term Care Unit aims to create a comfortable, therapeutic and warm environment while meeting the clinical needs of each resident. Family members can rest assured that their loved ones are in a safe, stimulating environment and receive regular specialized medical follow-up. Social Workers and Psychologists help residents and their families adapt to, and cope with, the transition to living in a Long Term Care Unit.
Residents also benefit from the availability of a range of other professionals at the Mount Sinai Hospital, including dietitians, physiotherapists and occupational therapists, among others. Involvement of the Recreology Department is strong, as resident stimulation and socialization are emphasized in our programming.
At any given time, 57 residents live in the Long Term Care Units. A team of nurses is always on the premises to ensure that residents receive the best quality care. Physicians are available on the premises, and medical specialists may be consulted, according to the needs of the resident. On-site dental services are also available.
People seeking admission to the Long Term Care Unit are generally dependent individuals who have lost their autonomy. Families of prospective residents over the age of 18 are requested to consult a social worker or their nearest CLSC to request admission to a long term care facility. A placement committee at the Agence de Santé et de Services Sociaux de Montréal will then determine the most suitable institution for placement according to the care needs of the individual.
Once the resident is deemed eligible for placement at Mount Sinai, a nurse from the hospital will visit them to ensure that their needs can be met in the Long Term Care Unit.
The “Milieu de Vie” approach used in our long-term units focuses on providing a warm, welcoming and secure environment for all long term care residents. This concept aims to maintain and reinforce the mental functions as well as the functional autonomy of residents, while promoting resident/family involvement in the decision making process.
The Recreology department is involved in creating this special “homelike” atmosphere. Through a wide range of programs and activities, residents are given the creative and social outlets to maintain certain aspects of their former day-to-day lives. The Recreology department helps to promote better quality of life with a monthly calendar filled with a diversified program of leisure activities such as:
